Work History

Phase: I

• Starting October 1997 and finished 1998.

• Replacement of the slate roof with steel and the flat roof resurfaced with asphalt.

• The Opera Hall roof trusses strengthened to engineering stamp.

• The east wing roof pulled apart, structurally strengthened to engineering stamp, insulated and drywalled.

• Opera Hall ceiling drywalled and insulated.

• Bell tower had footings dug-out and new footings put in with a pad and sump pit at bottom to take an elevator.

• Some interior drywalling to cover structural members on the east half.

Between Phases I & II

• Work in suite #4 with sanding and refinishing of floor.

• Some wiring.

April 1998 to April 1999

• Walls, painting and electrical work on suite #1.

• Floor in lower entry area.

• Pull down walls, re-drywall, electrical, floor in suite #3.

• Paint and trim in suite #5.

• Washroom on top floor. (performer prep area)

• Some drywalling and painting on top floor. (performer prep area)

• Painting of some exterior windows.

Phase: II

 May 1999 and finishing April 2000

• Rebuilding, copper roofing re-storing and making replacement trim for cupola.

• Repairing bell arm.

• Lifting and installing bell and cupola.

• Fitting of the bell tower with lift.

• Opening up and refinishing lift foyer.

• New stairs to front level.

• Stain glass window by new men's washroom.

• New men's washroom.

• Re-design women's washroom.

Phase: II

May 2000 to August 2000

• Finish painting in lift foyer and washrooms.

• Work on trim in front hall area.

• Upgrades to top floor. (performer prep area)

• Walls in Johnstone room.

• November 2000 - New furnace for suite #1.

• March 2001 - Close off end of hall in ground level entry for ACO office.

• August 2001 - Start stain glass at front door area.

• September 2001 - Re-build front entry and steps.

• December 2001 - Brick pointing of buttresses.

• April 2002 - Wall replacement in the Johnstone Room, with new window and door.

• April 2002 - Air-conditioning to suite #1

• June/July 2002- With the help of the Walkerton Image Committee the flower beds at VJH are being landscaped, extra green space added and a gazebo is being completed, to return the hall to the same appearance as when the hall was built.

Phase III

• November 2002 starts the installation of zone heating for Jubilee Hall. When this is completed each floor will have its own heating unit and by next summer it is hoped that air-conditioning will be a part of the hall.

• February 2003 completes the installation of the zone heating.

• February 2003 finish of trim around door and windows for Suite 2.

• February 2004 completes the installation of the air-conditioning through-out the building

• Refinishing of  wood floor on level four.

• Installation of hand rails on all four level, left side.

Phase IV:

• May 2006 started the renovations of the main foyer from the front door to the 4th. floor in preparation for homecoming.

• Carpet was removed and the original hardwood floor were refinished.

• Drop ceiling was installed to return it to its foyer glory

• Walls were repaired and replaced to bring it back to its former glory

• Steps leading to the 6th. floor were repaired and painted

• New fire door installed at the entrance of the 6th. floor

• 2007-2008

• Suite 6/Green Room and Suite 5/Boardroom are fully restored on the fourth floor. New ceilings, walls, trim, lighting and steps, plus utility room and fire door.

• New fire escape on the south side of the building.

Costs:

        To date this work has cost $500,000 in cash and in-kind donations, grants, hall operating income and income from opera hall events.
